Holiday Survival Guide: How to Stay Low Carb, Keto or Carnivore Without Feeling Deprived

The holidays are a beautiful mix of family, tradition, celebration… and a whole lot of food. And not usually the kind that fits your low-carb, keto, or carnivore goals.

But here’s the good news: you can stay on track, feel great, and still enjoy the season — without feeling like you’re missing out. It just takes a little planning and a few mindset shifts.

Here are some of my favorite tried-and-true tips to help you stay committed to your way of eating this holiday season.

1. Don’t Arrive Hungry

Walking into a holiday meal starving is basically asking for temptation.
Eat something protein-forward beforehand — eggs, leftover steak, burger patties, a few slices of turkey, whatever fits your plan.

A full stomach = better decisions.

2. Bring a Dish You Can Eat

Never rely on someone else’s menu.
Bring a dish that’s 100% on-plan so you know there will be something for you. Bonus: lots of people love keto-friendly food even if they aren’t keto.

Ideas:

  • Carnivore-friendly meatballs

  • Deviled eggs

  • Keto cheeseboard

  • Bacon-wrapped anything (always a win)

3. Load Up on Protein First

Protein keeps you satisfied and stabilizes blood sugar.
Fill your plate with turkey, ham, roast beef, brisket, salmon — whatever meat is available — before you even look at the sides.

Leading with protein gives you the best shot at staying on track.

4. Don’t Advertise Your Eating Plan

People love to comment when they notice you’re eating differently.
A simple “I’m just keeping it simple this year” is often enough to avoid debates, explanations, or pressure.

You don’t owe anyone a health lecture at Christmas dinner.

5. Set a Personal Non-Negotiable

Decide ahead of time what your line is.
Examples:

  • “I will not eat sugar.”

  • “I will stay under 20g carbs.”

  • “I’ll only eat meat today.”

When the rule is clear, the decision is made before temptation shows up.

6. Bring Electrolytes or Mineral Water

Staying hydrated helps curb cravings — and keeps you energized during long gatherings.
A packet of electrolytes, a bottle of sparkling water with lime, or just salted water can make a big difference.

7. Don’t Stand Near the Snack Table

This one sounds silly, but it works.
If you’re chatting with people beside the dessert spread… we all know how that goes.

Position yourself far from the chips, cookies, and rolls.

8. If You Slip, Don’t Spiral

One off-plan bite does not mean you “ruined” anything.
Just go right back to your normal way of eating at the next meal.

Shame spirals cause way more damage than food ever will.

9. Focus on the Real Point of the Season

Connection. Peace. Gratitude. Tradition.
Food is part of the holidays — but it doesn’t have to run the show.

Shift the focus, and the temptations feel a whole lot smaller.

10. Celebrate Your Wins

Sticking to your goals during a season of sugar, casseroles, and comfort food is something to be proud of.

Every time you honor your health, you reinforce your confidence and consistency — and that’s a gift that lasts far longer than the holidays.
